The BMELV promotes healthy enjoyment involving good, safe food. This includes the dissemination of information about the basic principles of a healthy diet, for instance in the National Action Plan "IN FORM – German National Initiative to Promote Healthy Diets and Physical Activity". In order to guarantee good, safe food from the farm gate and stable to the dinner plate, there are a number of statutory provisions coupled with extensive controls.

German Import Conditions for Food
There are a number of national and EU regulations that apply regarding the import of food to Germany. The importer must comply with these regulations as well; the importer is the first link in the domestic sales chain and consequently responsible for the marketability of the imported products.

The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food safety is an autonomous superior federal authority under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture. Its database provides insight into establishments authorised for trade in food products of animal origin.
