“The people of Tunisia were the first in North Africa to embark upon the venture of democratic change, and they are also pioneers when it comes to building democratic structures,” Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said during his visit to Tunis. Despite numerous problems, the pace of progress in Tunisia was encouraging, he said. “If the fledgling democratization process can be consolidated, Tunisia may turn out to be a role model for change in the region.” Germany would support this process, he said.
On 9 January, Mr Westerwelle was received by Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki. His agenda also included meetings with Mustafa Ben Jaafar, president of the country’s constituent assembly, as well as with Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali and Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalam, both of whom are members of the transitional government which has recently taken office.
The two Foreign Ministers signed declarations of intent on a German-Tunisian transformation dialogue and an energy partnership. Tunisia had to continue its reform efforts, and in doing so needed tangible support from the international community, Westerwelle said. “We want to help Tunisia consolidate democratic structures and to offer its people better economic prospects.” A strong focus on jobs, education and mobility was required in this context, he went on to say.
