Achieving greater understanding together
Relations between Western and Islamic societies are often dominated by misunderstandings and stereotypes. Moreover, in most Islamic countries, Islamism, an ideology aiming to imprint the laws of Islam on state and society has become more popular in recent years. The political concepts of democracy, universal human rights and pluralism are often rejected as "Western" and by extension "un-Islamic".

Dialogue with Islam in concrete terms
In our concept for the dialogue with Islam we seek an exchange about values, standpoints and opinions, and we are not afraid of controversy. Political talks at the highest level are not in themselves enough if this concept is to be realised. Rather, concrete projects are intended to help replace fossilised clichés with differentiated perceptions.

Launched in 2006 the aim of the Ernst Reuter Initiative (ERI) is to enhance German-Turkish cooperation in many fields: the arts and culture, politics and the media, the economy, science and education.

German Islam Conference
With the launch of the German Islam Conference in September 2006, the Federal Ministry of the Interior created a forum for long-term dialogue between the German state and Muslims in Germany. This dialogue aims to improve the institutional and social integration of Germany’s roughly four million Muslims and to ensure peaceful coexistence among all people in Germany, regardless of faith.
