Ambassador Georg Boomgaarden

Greetings from the departing Ambassador Georg Boomgaarden

A warm welcome to the website of the German Embassy in London!

When you read these lines, I will already be in retirement.

I have had the privilege of representing Germany in the United Kingdom for nearly five years. It has been a fascinating time in a host country that has become familiar and dear to me, a time I look back on with great gratitude. I was able to experience memorable and exciting years in Britain, in which the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, the 2012 Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2013 Champions League Final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich at Wembley were unforgettable highlights. At the same time the economic and financial crisis, European policy and international crises confronted our countries with great common challenges.

Germany and Britain have grown even closer together in these years – in spite of the difficult times the European Union is having to go through in the wake of the financial and economic crisis. Most gratifying of all to me is how people from both countries are getting to know each other better and better through thousands of daily contacts. Such building of bridges in everyday life is key to our ever closer German-British relations.

I invite you to discover the similarities and the differences between our two countries. On our website you will find, in addition to important consular advice, a wealth of political, economic and cultural information on Germany and Britain.

Do also visit our Facebook and Twitter pages or register for our monthly newsletter – we look forward to hearing from you!

Until the arrival of my successor, Minister Dr Rudolf Adam will head the Embassy as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim.

With very best wishes,

Georg Boomgaarden
