The Ambassador is Germany's highest ranking representative to the government of the United Kingdom. Since May 2014, Dr Peter Ammon is Germany's Ambassador to the Court of St James's.

The present-day buildings at 21-23 Belgrave Square were leased for 99 years in 1953. Following conversion of the three Georgian houses into one combined interior as the Ambassador's Residence and the addition of the chancery building, the Embassy has been fully functioning since 1955.
