Teaching in Germany by EC nationals

Under the conditions laid down in the relevant EC-Directive of 21.12.1989, foreign teachers from the EC may work on a permanent basis within the German education system as long as they have acquired the qualifications necessary for them to teach in their home country.

In Germany, the regulations concerning the teaching profession are the responsibility of each federal state (Land). Most Länder have passed legislation to implement the EC-Directive mentioned above. Some Länder, however, have yet to put this regulation into effect. For this reason, it is recommended that each applicant contacts the Ministry of Education of the Land in which he intends to work; they will be able to provide more precise information on the conditions that have to be fulfilled.

Generally speaking, the Ministries require applicants to meet two conditions: the first is that the applicant proves his knowledge of the German language; the second, that the applicant possesses qualifications which enable him to teach in two different subjects. In addition, some Länder ask that applicants supply evidence of professional experience and they may require the applicant to pass an aptitude test or to attend an induction course.

Foreign teachers may apply for employment contact addresses outside the state education system to:
